Recorded at the Reg's Place (San Antonio, TX) on April 5, 2012.

This week, we brought in our good friend Jay Whitecotton in for a home recording in our continued efforts to "grip the format". And here we go:

  • With The Hunger Games making a big splash, Jess takes time to pimp the US release of Japanese cult favorite Battle Royale in this weeks "Yeah, Imma Look Into Dat!". Then we reveal who'd kill first in a game of death...or any game for that matter.

  • "Wah, why are they remaking *blank*? They're just going to ruin it and buttfuck my childhood!" Really? Are they that bad or have they been rehashing shit longer than you think?

  • Word on the street is that Russia is developing a "zombie gun", a gun that turns people into zombies. Somehow, this leads into talks of the future of pornography (which is robots watching humans have sex) and how the Richest Man in the World gets off. Fascinating.

  • In Larry's "Dad's Corner(ed)", we mow over the phenomenon of "bullying". Is this something that society needs to work together to dissipate or are we just creating a soft world full of soft people? Personal experiences are shared and Regan reveals he hates Star Trek literature.

  • Club Comics vs. Alternative Comics. As Larry puts it so well, "[They're] the same, just doing different things." Eh. We think there's more to it than that.

Let us know what you think, folks. Any improvements, suggestions? Comment, yo!

Like competitive siblings born to your crucial mother, Lifestyle and Art haven't truly gotten alongside that very well. The frequent parallels drawn by critics and also the countless accusations of imitating each other have brought on the connection to crumble. Artwork has even experimented with to branch out by itself, viewing as artwork may be the only one cellular ample to do so (life, with the sake of the metaphor, is most likely inside a wheelchair or a little something since it is really more difficult to maneuver and usually just a bit sadder). But, despite distance between them critics stay unhappy, crying about how out of contact they've grow to be.

Ugh.

Nowhere would be the rivalry a lot more obvious than inside the context of film as opposed to reality. Audiences demand from customers which the two feel the exact same but glimpse completely diverse. For that reason, it is really a pleasant adjust of pace any time you catch Lifestyle and Art unintentionally performing alongside one another in cinema. I've gathered five motion pictures that, alone, are mediocre at very best, but coupled using the actual existence instances bordering just about every movie they're catapulted into greatness. It truly is like observing a kid stand about the shoulders of his handicapped brother in order to reach new heights, or two siblings functioning alongside one another in a very good column to beat a lifeless horse of the metaphor throughout two paragraphs.

#5Reunion in France

In the early 1940s, studios hadn't found out yet that flicks can be a lot more visually aesthetic than the usual filmed substantial university perform. Without having plausible particular effects or even a mastery of cinematography, the most beneficial motion pictures relied on outstanding dialogue, performing and plot to carry the story. Reunion in Francewas exclusive on the period in that it had none of such. The movie was these a colossal failure that in the event the female guide, Joan Crawford was interviewed a long time later she stated, "Oh God. When there is an afterlife and that i am for being punished for my sins, this is one of the photos they'll make me see over and over again."

"Stop it, remember to!"

The film stars John Wayne like a downed American pilot in occupied France who stays hidden from Nazis while using the enable of Joan Crawford. Also, they start to tumble in adore. The movie was designed in 1942 and seemingly by that time from the war, our nation was so used to making weapons they forgot the way to make something that did not inflict discomfort.
How Reality Intervened:

John Wayne appeared similar to a perfect match to the part of the WWII soldier, combating along with the French Resistance behind enemy lines. He was solid partially because he embodied the patriotism and masculinity The united states yearned for in the hero, and partly since each of the other actors were being hectic combating in the war. Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable all enlisted in the course of a time when the total entire world was threatened by a legitimately evil dictatorship that would have modified the program of human civilization had it succeeded. John Wayne, even so, caught all around to produce motion pictures. To his credit, he experienced a handful of extended standing accidents and Washington D.C. also authorized Hollywood actors some lenience in regard into the draft, presumably for the reason that The us essential the morale improve of flicks during among the worst situations in human heritage. John Wayne was able to defer 2 times and insisted that he would be a part of upafter he created some a lot more films but that working day by no means came. A person whose name was synonymous with American heroism for a whole generation managed to stay away from the messy small business of currently being a hero.

Why would a democracy have to have a Duke in any case?

So, watching Reunion in France, being aware of that it absolutely was made during the second World War and observing one of several only actors devoid of any context to the position stumble and sweat his way by means of it can make it a bit far more enjoyable to take a seat through.

#4Americathon

In 1979, United Artists unveiled a comedy that took place 20 several years while in the long term. A powerful conglomerate of Native Us residents threatens to foreclose on the federal federal government except it can increase ample dollars to stay afloat. The answer is a telethon for The us. The film failed to do extremely well and promptly disappeared. It bombed as it relied within the absurdly prophesied condition of The us inside the potential for some of its laughs. One of several kindest critics in the movie in 1979 said, "The premise of Americathon is strong more than enough to maintain a 15-minute skit, but the motion picture has the sick fortune to drag on for an hour in addition to a 50 %."
How Reality Intervened:

Over 30 many years afterwards, it seems the movie is healthier at predicting the long run compared to Mayan calendar. The ludicrous ideas of exactly what the planet could come to be are eerily accurate right now despite the fact that the predictions ended up prepared with implausibility in your mind. Americathon opens over a U.s. that's depleted of oil and falling into bankruptcy to overseas creditors; apparently in 1979 there was absolutely nothing funnier than the prospect of a devalued U.S. dollar. Also while in the motion picture, one of several largest firms in the usa is NIKE which doesn't seem to be significantly of the prediction apart from that in '79, NIKEwas just a compact shoe enterprise from the northwest that hadn't gone general public and hadn't aired an individual national professional. Over a global level, the movie predicts
